Errors found on Presidential Dollar Coins

Plain Edge Error coins found

Nick named the “plain edge” dollar, coin collectors are hunting through their rolls of George Washington dollars in search of this elusive “plain-edge” variety error.  One collector reported finding several “plain edge” coins in the same roll.  Others have searched and searched with hopes of finding their first plain edge dollar.  Still others report finding one or two plain edges after searching through large quantities of prez dollars.

What’s a plain edge dollar?

The new Presidential dollars have an unusual design, that includes the date(year), mintmark (P,D or S) and mottos (In God We Trust and E Pluribus Unum) on the edge of the coin. Click here to read more about the new edge lettering design.   This edge incused lettering is placed on the coin after the face and back are struck at the mint. 

Herein lies the reason for the new error.  Evidently the plain edge presidential dollars were made when the coins missed this last edge lettering step in the minting process, and somehow escaped detection by the US mint.

Plain edge error coins have been reported in both P and D mint rolls and bags.  However, once removed from the roll or bag, there is no method of distinguishing if the dollar was originally intended to be a P or D mint coin, because the mintmark and other lettering is missing from the edge.
