We think you will find that coin collecting can be great fun. On this site you will find helpful information that we think will make your hobby more enjoyable.
Coin collecting is sometimes called "the hobby of kings". It has been an enjoyable past-time for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Many collector terms you find in this dictionary are commonly used today to describe coin minting, grading, or some other hobby fact. Other words found in the glossary are seldom used in the modern world. However, because you may run across an unusual coin collector word when reading an old coin book or journal, we've included some of the more obscure terms.
New hobbyists (when visiting their first coin show, club, or local dealer's shop) have probably overheard people using unusual words, or a lingo or abbreviation that may have resembled a foreign language. Numismatists and coin dealers can use lots of uncommon terms to describe specific things in the hobby. Don't be alarmed. Learning about coins is much - much easier than learning a foreign language, and fun too!
